COSTA RICA

In Costa Rica, prepare for hot and humid summer days. The vibe is very casual; you don’t need to bring anything dressy or stylish. Nights are generally warm. However, you should bring along one sweatshirt or jacket to prepare for the occasional evening thunderstorm.

  1. Casual clothes (shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, casual sundresses for girls, etc.)
  2. 1 light-weight jacket or sweatshirt
  3. 1 pair jeans or long pants, preferably light weight
  4. 2 or more swimsuits
  5. Underwear
  6. Socks
  7. 2 pairs sandals or flip-flops
  8. 1 pair comfortable shoes for hiking and walking
  9. 1 beach towel
  10. 1 wide-brimmed hat, cap or visor
  11. 1 pair sunglasses
  12. Toiletries
  13. Hydrocortisone or anti-itch cream
  14. Neosporin
  15. Lots of sunscreen
  16. Lots of insect repellant — DEET is recommended
  17. Extra contacts and/or glasses
  18. Prescription medication
  19. Alarm clock or watch
  20. Camera and charger
  21. Pocket size Spanish-English dictionary
  22. Journal, magazine, and/or reading book
  23. Pens
  24. Passport
  25. Photocopy of passport
  26. Copy of travel insurance policy or policy number
  27. Some spending money (bring small denominations of the US dollar; traveler’s checks are not recommended)

ECUADOR

Ecuadorians tend to be well-dressed and conservative. In Cuenca, the days generally go from cool to warm (65 degrees), there can be and the nights can be quite cool (45 degrees). Boys should bring long-sleeved and short-sleeved collared shirts, T-shirts, pants and jeans. Girls will also want some conservative clothes to choose from. Generally, women do not wear mini-skirts, shorts, or spaghetti straps in town. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen as Ecuador is located on the equator.
